oil and acrylic on canvas, 40x80cm, 2017

Don’t let yourselves be fooled by the richness of the background: all that glitters is not gold after all, isn’t it? This painting was done in one of my darkest hours. One of those moment in life when you feel like drowning. And I mean literally drowning, with all that darkness and gasping for air. But beauty will save the world, someone said. So I didn’t picture a dishevelled victim of the sea, but a more composed Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. After hearing the news about her father’s death she goes crazy and eventually drowns herself. Millais had surrounded her by delicate flowers, I by liquid gold. More elegant than a castaway, but not less painful.
